Course Description: Survey of the history of management and review of significant management literature. Application of management theories to practical problems in planning, organizing, and controlling business activity. Course Objectives: This course presents a thorough and systematic coverage of management theory and practice. It will focus on the basic roles, skills and functions of management with special attention to managerial responsibility for effective and efficient achievement of goals. Special attention will be given to social responsibility, managerial ethics, and the importance of multinational organizations. Upon completion of the course the student should: 1. Understand basic managerial concepts and their application in achieving high performance. 2. Be familiar with the historical development and varying perspectives concerning management theory and its applications to business organizations. 3. Be knowledgeable of the theory and practical applications of the managerial process. 4. Be aware of the importance of the environment, technology and human resources in determining structural and operating features/processes that are most important in achieving high performance and total quality management. 5. Note: This course is being taught in the WebCT environment. The "Calendar" feature of WebCT will be considered the day-to-day, operational course syllabus. Students are expected to consult WebCT Calendar on a daily basis for assignments and update to assignments. Prerequisites: None Texts: Required: Daft, Richard L. Management, Seventh Edition, Thomson, South-Western, 2006 Los Angeles Times, or other major daily newspaper. Read major pages plus business section daily for classroom discussion and examination purposes. Get Los Angeles Times college discount. Measurement of Learning Outcomes: Examinations: Quiz #1: 10 points Book Case: Two to three students will team upon on a case from the book, conduct supplementary research on the topics and prepare a 10-15 minutes lesson on the case to/with the class. The presentation will be formatted as a PowerPoint presentation and uploaded unto WebCT no later than 48 prior to time of presentation. Innovation and creativity in the method of instruction is urged. 10 points (the team grade is the individual grade). Written/Oral Report: As a two or three person team, conduct and report on a business project to be chosen by the students and approved by the instructor. Students may elect to complete the project on their own by the requirements cited below remain the in effect. 1. The report is to be 20 pages in length, bibliography, tables of contents and charts/figures are not included in the length. 2. The project paper must contain a minimum of 20 secondary and 3 primary sources, knowledgeble experts and other than academics. Use of both types of sources must be demonstrated in the work and all sources cited in the bibliography must be used in the text of the paper. Further instructions on preparing the paper will be provided. 3. All bibliographic sources must be current and no sources prior to January 1, 2001 may be used. 4. Secondary sources: A minimum of 10 Internet sources must be used as well as 10 non-Internet secondary sources. 5. Primary sources: these are actual persons from whom information is obtained related to the topic. A minimum of one (1) primary source by each student regardless of team assigned or numbers assigned to a team. The contact may be in person, by telephone, fax, email, or other written correspondence. 6. The paper topic is due in Week 3. The paper topic may not be changed after the paper outline and bibliography is turned in in Week 7. No exceptions. 7. The term paper/project is due in Week 9. Written report: 30 points, Oral Report: 5 points. Oral reporrs may be delivered in a foreign language providing the presentation graphics are detailed in English and a handout is provided of frequently used terms in the presentation. Foreign language extra credit: 1 point. All oral reports must be presented in PowerPoint and loaded unto WebCT 48 hours prior to presentation in class. Attendance and Participation: Attendance and participation is necessary due to the nature of the material. Students will be called upon to express their knowledge and are encouraged to asked questions and volunteer opinions. Unexcused absences will result in 3.3 points deducted per occasion. Two "no question asked" absences are permitted. In addition, assignment turned in late will receive a 50% reduction in grade. Additional reading and articles will be assigned as the course progresses. Students are required to read and understand the material. They are expected to make use of the learning opportunities made available by technology, including WebCT which will be used considerably in this course. Students are expected to access the World Wide Web and other Internet sources to update their knowledge of on current developments in business and management. Students may be expected to be tested on these matters orally and with the technology available. WebCT participation counts in terms of individual "postings" and "repostings" as 15 points out of the 25 total for this grade component. Students are expected to read articles related to business and management in the Los Angeles Times, or other major daily national newspaper of choice. There are numerous requirements and opportunities for classroom participation both in the actual classrom and on WebCT. Please note: All assignments involving WebCT will be posted 48 hours prior to time/date assignment is due. Attendance and Participation: 25 points.
