Sorority Terms To Know
Sorority: A Greek lettered sisterhood
Panhellenic (NPC): The National Panhellenic Conference is the national governing council of the 26 women's sororities
Chapter: a unit of a national sorority or fraternity. At each school, a sorority's National governing council will give them an individual chapter name so they may be differentiated from other schools.

Potential New Member (PNM): That's you guys! Any woman interested in becoming a sorority member whom is eligible according to College Panhellenic Associations requirements.
Active Member: a woman who has completed her new-membership and has been initiated into her sorority
Alumna: an initiated sorority woman who has graduated or is no longer in school
Legacy: a Potential New Member that has a mother, grandmother, or sister who is part of a National Sorority
Recruitment Counselor or Rho Gamma: A Panhellenic member who has disaffiliated herself from her sorority during formal recruitment who is available to answer any questions a Potential New Member may have about Recruitment
Silence: period of time when the Spring Quarter ends, till Fall Recruitment begins. No chapter woman may recruit Potential New Members for her individual chapter. It is PANHELLENIC recruitment.
Strict or Total Silence: the period of time that Recruitment Counselors and Potential New Members may have no communication between sorority members until the potential new member accepts her Bid. This includes verbal, written or typed.
Bid: the official invitation to become a new member of an individual sorority
Bid Day: an informal day where each chapter meets their official new members for the first time
House Total: The number of ladies you are allowed to recruit up to at Cal Poly Pomona
Initiation: ritualistic ceremony during which new members receive lifelong membership privileges.
Quota: the number of ladies attending preference parties divided by the number of chapters.
Mutual Selection Process: both the Potential New Member and the chapters drop selections
Suicide Bid: a Potential New Member who intentionally indicates that she wishes to only attend one chapters preference (This is highly discouraged!!!)
Continuous Open Bidding/Snap Bid: A time when chapters & Panhellenic contact ladies who did not attend, single preferenced, or otherwise dropped out to see if they would like to join a chapter with room permitting.
