Lunch 'n' Learns

Would you like to be entertained, challenged, and educated during your lunch hour?  If so, bring your own lunch and join us in viewing some new and classic training videos.  After watching the video, those who are interested may choose to participate in a discussion.

We’ll start at exactly 12:10 and conclude by 12:50, so you’ll have plenty of time to travel to and from your work area.

Topics:

The Abilene Paradox, June 18
Jump in the car and hit the road to Abilene – it’s a journey during which deeply held values fall victim to group dynamics; a road that takes you to group consensus, but unfortunately, to a false consensus.  So how can we avoid false consensus, overcome the fear of speaking out, and encourage effective decision-making in a group?  Join us for this entertaining DVD and prepare to look at group-think in a whole new way.

Don’t Wait – Negotiate:  How to Get What You Want in Life, July 9
In this video, Mimi Donaldson tells us how to master the basic six skills to get more of what you want.

Working with You is Killing Me, July 30
Do you have a co-worker who drives you nuts?  Sometimes it’s just a clash of personalities and we have to live with it.  But if someone is crossing your boundaries, you can’t expect him/her to read your mind or your signals.  Don’t be a victim, and don’t respond passive-aggressively with your own antics.  Rather, consider assertively setting an appropriate boundary.  Want to learn more?  Join us for this thought-provoking DVD.

The Pygmalion Effect:  Managing the Power of Expectations, August 13
Limited expectations bring limited results; high expectations bring high results.  This phenomenon is known as the Pygmalion Effect and has been documented numerous times in business and in education.  In this video, we get an overview of the Pygmalion Effect through real-life examples, dramatic vignettes and scenes from the classic movie “Pygmalion”, where individuals are transformed through the positive (or negative) expectations of another.

How to Deal with Difficult People, August 27
Ever run across a Chronic Complainer?  How about a Know-It-All or a Yes-Person or a plain, garden-variety jerk?  If you’ve ever wondered how to respond to dysfunctional personalities, join us for this entertaining video with lots of helpful hints.

Twelve Angry Men:  Teams That Don’t Quit, September 10
Utilizing clips from the classic movie starring Henry Fonda, we see parallels between the dramatic confrontations on the screen and certain behaviors familiar to work groups.  In this DVD we’ll learn about open inquiry, accepting responsibility for a decision, the value of conflict in uncovering ideas, and the essential role of diversity in making good decisions.
