TISSOT Watches
A Swiss-Made History
The history of Tissot starts in 1853 when Charles Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile found a factory in a little place of the Swiss canton Neuenburg, called Le Locle, where they started to produce pocket watches featuring two time zones.
From day one of the foundation, Tissot was very committed to popularize its hand made watches outside the frontiers of the Swiss country, and so Charles- Emile traveled to the United States and Russia to sell their famous Savonnette-Pocket Watch very successfully.
The international expansion of the company went on when Charles-Emile took over Tissot and started to produce wristwatches in 1915 with his son’s help.
Survival in Times of Crisis
After the global economic crisis occurred in 1929 the market for watches collapsed in Europe and so two different companies had to find one solution to save this market and the only reasonable solution for Tissot and Omega was to unite the capital in a single holding company, but maintain separate companies. At that point of time, 1929, they found the ‘Société Suisse pour l’industrie Horlogére SA (SSIH)’.
In 1983 Tissot seemed to be facing a complete break down of the company because of the oil crisis in 1977, even though they gave up establishing internal clockworks, but with the amalgamation of SSIH and the ASUAG (General Corporation of Swiss Horological Industries) with the Swatch-Group the company was saved and survived another crisis successfully.
