Moving to California

Moving to another place in the world is always exciting, but there are few places that could make a more fascinating new home than the US state of California. Moving to California is a big step to take, as with any relocation, but you are almost certain not to regret your decision and to enjoy living in your new home.  Of course, it is always important to first visit the place you are planning to move to and make sure you can see yourself living there. If that is possible, you could even try and get to know your neighbors or the people at your prospective workplace or at the school your kids might be attending in the future. California, the third-biggest US state, with its beautiful beaches, its diverse population and its thriving economy that offers limitless possibilities, has something in store for everyone.

The paperwork

Obviously, there are a few administrative details to be taken care of before you can proudly call your friends and tell them you’ve just moved to California. First, you need to effectively become a resident, that is, you need to make sure you have a property or can rent a flat there. Be careful when bringing your beloved pets with you, some need permits or health checks before they can legally stay in California. You’ll want to register to vote as well – few things could be more important! Make sure you do so on time, because there are certain deadlines you have to meet in order to be able to take part in elections. You might also want to apply for a Californian driving license in case you need one. Also make sure you register your vehicle. Of course, possibly the most important thing will be to read up essential information or talk to someone who can help you out on these topics – things ranging from smoking regulations in California to speed limits and tax rates. Get all the telephone numbers that should come in handy in case of emergency – 911, where you can reach police, firemen, and request medical assistance, maybe also write down the number of your nearest hospital or of a doctor you know well. Visit the area where you’ll live, ensure there’s all the public transportation, the stores and the facilities you need. After doing all that, you’re just about set to move in!

Settling down

Once you’ve made sure your legal affairs are all sorted and everything is in place, you can go about settling down and moving in. Why not bring your neighbors a nice cake round, or another little welcome present to say hello? It’s a nice gesture to say you’re looking forward to living next to them. Take a trip round the local area, see where entertainment centers and shopping malls are, maybe where you could go in the evenings and what the coolest nightclubs are. Take your kids round to their new school and show them the nearest playground, look around for the cheapest shops and nice avenues to have long walks on when you’re not working. You probably didn’t have time for things like that when you were settling all administrative matters, and moving to a different place can be quite a hassle. So now is the time to take a break, maybe even take a week or so off work, to really get to know your new environment and to ensure you’ll feel well and know where to go if you need anything. California is stunning, so you might not only want to visit the area you live in but also look around and discover some of the beautiful things the state has to offer. If you don’t live near the beach, why not drive there with friends or family and spend a day or two there to appreciate the beauty of your new home?

Above all, don’t let yourself get stressed out. Moving anywhere is a lot of work and there are always a lot of things to be done, but just think of the sense of achievement and the satisfied feeling you’ll have once those things are all done and you can proudly call yourself a resident of California. This beautiful state never runs out of things to offer you and you will always have a reason to be fascinated, and if you get the opportunity to move there, you definitely shouldn’t miss out.
