My Research deals with investigating the role of cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors in the immune system. Marijuana components, such as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and the endogenous cannabinoids arachidonoylethanolamine (anandamide) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) alter immune functions. Cannabinoids affect lymphocytes, macrophages and natural killer cells in a variety of functions. Overall, cannabinoids are perceived as immunosupressors, although this notion has been recently challenged, since some cannabinoids are known to enhance lymphocyte proliferation.
