Darcel L. Hulse
Sempra LNG, President & CEO
Darcel Hulse could easily describe his work environment as very energizing, partly due to his successful leadership. He is president and CEO of Sempra LNG, which leads Sempra Energy’s efforts to develop, build and operate liquefied natural gas receipt terminals. Sempra LNG is a subsidiary of Sempra Global, the umbrella organization for Sempra Energy’s growth businesses. Sempra Energy is a Fortune 500 energy services holding company with revenues of $9.4 billion in 2004; they serve more than 10 million customers in six countries.
Hulse began his career after he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Cal Poly Pomona in 1970 and immediately began work for Unocal as an engineer in its Los Angeles refinery. By 1985, he was promoted to vice president for Unocal’s Corporate Engineering and Construction Division. He served as president of the Geothermal-Power Division in 1990 and led the company’s initial geothermal efforts in Indonesia. As president of Unocal’s Asia-Pacific Ventures, he was responsible for new business development in Southeast Asia before joining Sempra in 1999.
Hulse also serves on the Board of Directors for the Institute of the Americas and as a trustee for the University of California, San Diego Foundation. He was the founding chairman of the College of Engineering’s Industrial Action Council, the entity that created the vision for the recently built Engineering Laboratory Building at Cal Poly Pomona where he was selected as the College of Engineering’s Distinguished Alumnus in 1988. Instrumental in facilitating generous donations from both Unocal and Sempra, Hulse is willing to consider ways to continue supporting the university through the National Development Council. Darcel and Elaine Hulse live in San Diego, and he enjoys fly fishing in his free time.
