Sylvia C. Hall
National Oilwell Varco (NOV) – formerly Ameron International Corp.,
Director, Engineering Development Center

Sylvia C. HallIf you want to learn about water and waste water transmission and distribution pipelines, fiberglass-reinforced pipelines for the petroleum industry, lighting poles for utilities, and wind towers for energy production, just ask Sylvia Hall. She is director of Corporate Research & Engineering for National Oilwell Varco (formerly Ameron International Corporation), a leading producer of fiberglass, concrete, and steel pipe products for transporting oil, chemicals, corrosive fluids, water, and wastewater and specialized materials used in infrastructure projects. Hall is an expert on corrosion, corrosion control and cathodic protection of the various piping materials. Protecting water and petroleum pipelines and storage facilities from corrosion is not only essential for business but also for the protection of the communities that are near pipelines and the environment.

Hall is active with NACE International (formerly National Association of Corrosion Engineers). She continues to use her connections with that organization to sponsor student scholarships, housing and travel expenses for students to attend the association’s annual conference, and lunch at the student section meetings. She endowed a scholarship at Cal Poly Pomona and provided internships for several engineering students, which reinforces her desire to lessen the financial burden for university students.

Her connection with Cal Poly Pomona includes three degrees earned: an MBA in 1983; a Master of Science in Chemistry, 1979; and a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, 1974. She has been a guest lecturer for corrosion engineering courses, and her father taught surveying classes in the 1960s. Hall has participated in the Professor for a Day program and has been active in the Alumni Association, receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004. She is also a member of the College of Engineering CME Action Council. Hall lives in Hacienda Heights with her partner, William Kellogg Wilson, a descendant of the W.K. Kellogg family.
