Lawrence M. Gates (Larry)
DRC Engineering Inc, Principal
Alumnus Lawrence Gates believes there should
be a strong link between the professional and
educational worlds to keep university curricula up-to-date on technical trends. As living proof of this
connection, he maintains generous support of the
College of Engineering and the civil engineering
department. Earning his bachelor’s degree in civil
engineering in 1987, Gates began his career as
a project engineer. A decade later, he founded
Development Resource Consultants Inc. (DRC), which
has branch offices in Southern California and Nevada
and boasts more than 100 employees, many of whom
are Cal Poly Pomona graduates. DRC is an engineering
and designing firm with projects that range from
small one-acre businesses to giant 100-acre power
centers and with clients such as the Glendale Fashion
Center, Anaheim Resort Hotels and the Chino
Spectrum Towne Center.
The 2006 Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Engineering is a member of the Founders’ Society. To help financially disadvantaged students pursue an education, he and his wife have endowed two university scholarships to honor his mother and a family friend. They have also provided funding for the ASCE concrete canoe competitive team and sponsored the upgrading of the Infrastructure Design Laboratory. Other gifts have helped to upgrade the Hydraulics Laboratory and the Water Quality Laboratory.
His hobbies include skiing, running, mountain biking
and traveling. His wife, Amy, works with him at DRC.
