Doc started the Cal Poly Pomona Solar Energy Team (CaPSET) in 1989 by recruiting faculty and students from all majors to respond to General Motors' request for proposal to develop and race a solar vehicle in the innagural GM SUNRAYCE USA. Cal Poly Pomona responded, won a spot, and raced in the field of 32 solar vehicles from Disney World in Florida to GM's Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. The team went on to develop and race three differrent solar cars in races on three continents.
Below are photographs of the three solar cars which were designed and built at Cal Poly Pomona. Much more information on the project, teams, and events are found at the CaPSET web site.

In 1996, Doc and several team members advised the Los Altos (high school) Solar Vehicle Team as they designed, built and raced a solar vehicle in the World Solar Challenge, Australia. In 1997 and in 1999 Doc was instrumental in Sunrayce 97 and Sunrayce 99 as a race official.
