Experience:

Over 20 years in the aerospace and defense industry in "Structural Dynamics" (at Genreal Dynamics) and over 10 years working with solar vehicles and teams.

What I did this summer:

Sunrayce 99 - Inspector for the event. Of the registered teams, 44 actually presented a solar vehicle for the competition. June 14-18 was the scruitineering and last chance qualifier for Sunrayce 99. Only 29 of the vehicles passed the qualification inspections and were able to complete the required 125 miles in order to be allowed onto the actual race course.

Sunrayce 99 started on June 20 at the Department of Energy building in Washington, D.C. The race consisted of nine days of racing and one recharge day at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia. The race finished at Disney's Epcot Center in Ocala, Florida on June 29. The solar cars were on exhibit at Epcot for two day after the race finish. The race was won by the University of Missouri-Rolla.

For complete details of the event go to the EDS website Sunrayce.com.

SWIM 99 - Participated in the two week Cal Poly Pomona Summer Web Institute and Mentoring program, August 16-26. SWIM is an intensive introductory web development workshop designed to help faculty integrate World Wide Web-based technologies in their classes. Participants develop web-based course materials with the Seven Principles of Good Practice for Undergraduate Education in mind. SWIM99 is sponsored by the university's Faculty Center for Professional Development and ITAC (Instructional Technology and Academic Computing).

Web Page Development - Used the information gained from SWIM 99 to put together this Web site and the materials for ME 215, which I teach this fall.

CaPSET Reunion - Alumni from the Cal Poly Pomona Solar Energy Teams (1990-1995) were treated to a VIP Tour of the East Side Reservoir Project. On Saturday, July 10, Metropolitan Water District employees provided guides, busses, lunch and information about the East Side Project. The reservoir will double the water storage capacity in southern California. The resulting lake will be 4.5 miles long and with large dams at each end. It should be one fantastic facility when completed and filled with water.

Building 17 - Worked on design considerations and power needs for the Mechanical Engineering laboratories for the new building.

Senior Projects - Advised two senior project students during the summer.

Faculty Search - Prepared an advertisement for use in a new faculty search.

38 Chevrolet - Worked with Brian, my son, (in my garage) to get the old car frame and drive train back on four wheels. We are still quite a ways off from getting the vehicle running, but at least we can now push it around when needed.

Home remodelling - Progress was slow, but at least there has been progress. The wife wants the garden room finished before Thanksgiving. Unfortunately she doesn't know exactly what she wants or how the room should be finished.

Touring with Australian Professor - Paul Wellington form the Mechanical Engineering Department at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia stopped in Pomona for a week on his return trip from England. While he stayed with us, we got the advantage of his expertise in educational projects and industrial projects. In return, we took him to Solvang, the Getty, and other points of interest in southern California.
