In 2008, Cal Poly Pomona earned 1st place overall, as well as 2nd place overall in dynamic events and endurance race at the SAE Baja competition in Peoria, Ill. Cal Poly Pomona has been competing in the SAE Baja competition for nearly two decades and has always been very competitive. The 2009 team has set out to defend their title as champions by using boxed sheet metal rear lower suspension arms to protect against rock impact; one piece, splined driveshafts for increased reliability and strength; and to increase driver comfort during hard landings and turns they have fabricated a fiberglass composite road style seat. Cal Poly Pomona is using a Dana H-12 FNR transaxle with a CVT transmission that gives the ability to adjust center to center distance for maximum tuning capability. The team is also using adjustable rod ends on 3 out of 4 suspension arms for increased tuning capability. Cal Poly Pomona has had excellent sponsorship including an aluminum heat treater who is giving the team the ability to select a wider variety of materials for the 2009 car. The team’s philosophy is to design a car that is strong enough to endure any challenges competition may bring.
