History of World Civilization - The Ancient Period

This course is a general survey of the most important developments in world history from the beginning of civilization to roughly the 7th century C.E. Lectures will highlight the social, economic, religious and other cultural developments and transformations in the most significant regions of the world in order to appreciate their contributions to world civilization. The required text is Craig LOCKARD, Societies, Networks, and Transitions (Volume A) which is found in the Bronco Bookstore. More readings will be either handed out in class or delivered through e-mail.
Grades will be based on a midterm (30 %), two typed-written essays (3-5 pages each) 20%, and a final (40%). The remaining 10% will count for attendance and class participation. Work for extra credit is welcome. Students must decide upon their work in consultation with the instructor.
Please note that there will be no makeup of exams or quizzes without legitimate excuse (for example, a doctor's note). We will abide by the policies, standards and procedures found in the General Catalog regarding proper conduct, including plagiarism. Please consult relevant pages in the Catalog, especially pp. 50 ff. and 472.

1st essay due
Fourth week: Chapter 4
Fifth week: Chapter 5
Midterm Exam Monday October 29th
Sixth week: Chapter 6
Seventh Week: Chapter 7
2nd Essay due
Eighth week: Chapter 8
Ninth week: Chapter 9
Tenth week: wrap up and review
All papers and extra credit reports due.
Final Exam is on Friday December 7th from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM
