California State Polytechnic University
Mechanical Engineering Projects Lab

The Engineering Projects Lab in 17-1456 may be utilized by students to work on academic related projects. Students who use the facility must be enrolled in either EGR 102 or EGR 200 in order to be allowed access to the shop area; there will be no exceptions to this rule. These EGR sections are set up to allow access as well as individual instruction to students who have a basic knowledge of proper handtool use as well as some knowledge of machine shop practices. In order to use the larger machine tools in this area, students must have taken ME 299L and MFE 201. Prior to any type of machining or fabrication work, the student or group must show project plans and detailed drawings, which includes a list of hardware and tooling needs (drills, taps, endmills, cutters, fasteners, etc). This requirement will help to eliminate wasted time in the shop. You are welcome to work on your school related projects without having ME 299L or a shop class but will not be permitted to utilize the machine tools until completion of the machine shop class requirements.

The following basic rules must be followed at all times while using the facilities:

¢ NO OPEN TOE SHOES

¢ DO NOT WORK ALONE

¢ WEAR EYE PROTECTION AT ALL TIMES

¢ DO NOT WEAR GLOVES WHILE OPERATING MACHINES

¢ REMOVE WATCHES, RINGS, AND OTHER JEWELRY BEFORE OPERATING MACHINES

¢ IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT ANY PROCEDURE, ASK

¢ CLEAN UP AREA AND PUT AWAY TOOLS WHEN FINISHED

¢ NO TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, MANUALS OR REFERENCE MATERIALS WILL BE TAKEN FROM THE SHOP TO ANOTHER LOCATION

¢ NO FOOD OR DRINK ALLOWED IN SHOP AREA

SAFETY is the most important job in the shop environment, please keep this in mind at all times and look around you to make sure others are operating in a safe manner.

It is extremely important that all tools, clamps, cutters, drills, etc. are put back where they belong when you are finished. If you cannot clean up after yourself and properly take care of the machinery, tools, and tooling, you will be denied access to the shop area.

In order to maintain programs such as the SAE Collegiate Design projects and other design groups, full cooperation with the above rules is expected. Abuse of projects lab privileges could result in the Dept., College, or University restricting or closing the shop for student use.

Remember to:

SIGN IN AND OUT WHEN ENTERING AND LEAVING THE SHOP AREA

USE THE TOOL REPAIR / REPLACEMENT FORMS IF ANY TOOLING, TOOLS, OR EQUIPMENT IS DAMAGED OR BROKEN
