The Chinese Language Program

 

The Chinese program at California State University, Pomona offers three levels of Chinese language instruction in quarter rotation. The curriculum of the Chinese language program is skill-based. The teaching and learning goals focus on integrating listening, speaking, reading and writing skills within a cultural context. To help students communicate effectively in the real-life settings, the classrooms are student-centered and diverse learning styles are greatly respected.

First Year Chinese

The first year Chinese is designed to provide instruction and practice in all the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with a special emphasis on communication. While the learning of vocabulary and sentence structures is a major component in these courses, efforts will be made to help students handle various simple tasks such as talking about hobbies, dinning out, going shopping, and giving directions. All the classroom activities will be carried out within a cultural context.

FL 171 (Elementary Chinese I)

A four-unit course designed for beginners of Chinese without any background of the language. Introduction to Chinese pronunciation and fundamental vocabulary and grammar. Development of listening & reading comprehension and speaking. Introduction of writing and development of cultural awareness to communicate at low-elementary level.

FL 172 (Elementary Chinese II)

Prerequisite: Completion of FL 171 or equivalent

A four-unit course designed for beginners of Chinese with some knowledge of the language. More practice of pronunciation and introduction to basic vocabulary and grammar. Continued development of listening & reading comprehension, speaking and writing to communicate at mid-elementary level.

Prerequisite: Completion of FL 172 or equivalent

A four-unit course designed for beginners of Chinese with basic knowledge of the language. Extension of fundamentals of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.
Continued development of listening and reading comprehension, speaking, and writing to communicate at high-elementary level.

Second Year Chinese

The second year Chinese helps students expand from their base in first year Chinese to continue to develop their four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Many of the grammatical constructions introduced in first year Chinese will be repeated in this course with increasing sophistication. While many of the linguistic tasks students will learn to handle are similar to those of first year Chinese, the level of language required to carry out these tasks is more advanced. All the classroom activities will be carried out within a cultural context.

FL 271 (Intermediate Chinese I)

Prerequisite: Completion of FL 173 or equivalent

A four-unit course designed for intermediate-low students of Chinese. Application of more advanced grammar structures and vocabulary. Further development of listening and reading comprehension. Emphasis on conversational skills and writing competency at intermediate-low level.

FL 272 (Intermediate Chinese II)

Prerequisite: Completion of FL 271 or equivalent

A four-unit course designed for intermediate-mid students of Chinese. Further development of the four language skills within a cultural context. Rigorous practice of spoken and written Chinese in complex communicative activities. Application of more advanced grammatical structures in various functional tasks.

FL 273 (Intermediate Chinese III)

Prerequisite: Completion of FL 272 or equivalent

A four-unit course designed for intermediate-high students of Chinese. Further expansion and integration of the four language skills within a cultural context. Development of idioms and more advanced grammar. Emphasis on language proficiency and social skills in various communicative tasks.

Third Year Chinese

FL 371 (Chinese Culture and Civilization)

Prerequisite: Completion of FL 273 or equivalent

Comprehensive interdisciplinary survey of traditional Chinese culture and civilization. Taught either in English or Chinese. Emphasis on Chinese history, philosophy, religion, literature, art, education, and medicine complemented by modern critical references.
