Course Description

GSC 491 L – Watershed Hydrology Field Module

This Field Module explores the hydrology of the San Antonio Canyon watershed in the eastern San Gabriel Mountains (a headwaters basin of the Santa Ana River watershed). Students examine hillslope and stream channel hydrology. Channel cross-sections are surveyed and stream flow measurements recorded. The students use USGS discharge records from a nearby gauging station to develop a rating curve and to evaluate flood frequency. A final project report is required, including site maps, stream channel profiles and cross sections, survey data tables, rating curves, hydrographs, and flood frequency diagrams. Fieldwork is conducted over several weekends during the quarter. Grading is based on participation and quality of project report.
