Course Description

GSC 491 L – Coastal Tectonics Field Module (formerly GSC 499 – Tectonic Geomorphology)

This Field Module explores the coastal tectonics of two California State Parks: Crystal Cove in Orange County and Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz County. Students examine flights of Pleistocene marine terraces formed by tectonic uplift at both sites. Terraces are mapped in the field and topographic profiles are surveyed using differential barometric altimetry. The students determine uplift rates based on published terrace ages and by correlation with global sea level curves. A final project report is required, including terrace maps, topographic profiles, survey data tables, and sea level correlation diagrams. Fieldwork is conducted over several weekends during the quarter. Grading is based on participation and quality of project report.
