THE SQ3R METHOD OF STUDYING

Survey Familiarizes the reader with the material presented in a chapter.
Question Formulating a question before reading encourages the reader to become more involved with the chapter.
Read Reading with a specific purpose helps to promote concentration.
Recite Allows the reader to assess his/her understanding of the reading material.
Review Challenges the reader to recall the chapter's main points and comprehend the relationships between them.

These five steps of the SQ3R method – Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review- when polished into a smooth and efficient method should result in faster reading, picking out the important points, and fixing them in memory. You will find one other worthwhile outcome: Quiz questions will seem familiar because the headings turned into questions are usually the points emphasized in quizzes.

Survey         Read the title of the chapter, each boldface section heading, the introduction and summary, and look at any illustrations.

Continue using the question, read, and recite steps on a separate paper until you have finished each section of the chapter.  Then complete the review step.

Review        Look over the whole chapter by rereading the section headings.  Summarize the chapter’s main points in your own words.
