History
The Los Robles Horticulture Club was originally founded for the students of Cal Poly Pomona having a common interest in the art of gardening. The club was founded in 1940 and had 9 members. In 1941, four club members were selected to represent out school at the National Flower Show, where they placed 4th in the flower judging contest. This marked the beginning of our club's success and proud tradition of excellence at national horticultural contests. In 1942 our club adopted our current name of "Los Robles" meaning, "The Oaks" in Spanish. That year also marked the beginning of our outstanding relationship with the Los Angeles County Fair, a relationship that we still reap benefits from today. In 1951, the club was credited for the prize winning Tournament of Roses float, due to the beautiful flowers that were grow by our club members and used on the float. In 1970, our club was responsible for growing and arranging all the flowers that were used during the homecoming celebration. The club has continued to do many things to beautify not only on the Cal Poly campus on which we all study, but also in the surrounding community. One of our most recent contributions to the community was in 1998, when the club donated $300 to Claremont's Vista del Valle Elementary School and helped them establish a drought tolerant garden that could be used to help promote education in horticulture. |
