Learning Goals of Project:

  • Learn how to design and develop an exciting web site using multimedia:  Apply Web site design concepts to your own site
  • Special issues in web development using video, and other graphics, animation, and audio.
  • The use of web usability, accessibility, and human-centered design concepts to increase the usefulness, attractiveness, accessibility, and ease of use
  • Explain what you did to build your multimedia files so that others may learn new techniques
  • Explain what you did to build your multimedia files so that others may learn new techniques
  • Fully develop the content for your site and integrate it so that it all works together!

Web site Project 4 has 2 main elements:

1. Multimedia Web Site (10 points)

  • work on design issues
  • validation of all pages

2.  Movie (40 points)

This movie should tell some kind of story that is consistent with your Web site. Originality will be rewarded!

A 30-day trail version of Premiere CS4 is available from the Adobe website.

Your movie should tell a story -- have a beginning, middle and end

  • Make it exciting! interesting!
  • Movie needs to be related to the topic of your web site

Develop movie from video clips

  • Video cameras are available for checkout in Studio 6
  • Digitize video clips from a VHS videotape, video camera, etc., on video workstation in HP IWD lab or in Studio 6
  • use video clips from other sources (web, CD collections, etc.)
  • Workstation needs special setup for video capture-- get help from Dr. Soe during her office hours or between 5 & 6 PM MW (ask ahead to be sure help is available then)
  • import video clips into Premiere

OR Put together a movie from individual photos transferred from Photoshop into Premiere

  • use transitions to move from one photo to next
  • use filters to pan across photo to make it appear to move

Use Audio appropriate to movie topic

  • use audio that comes with video
  • import audio clips (WAV or AIF) that you find on web, or CD collections 
  • Convert audio from other music formats via a Ripper (links to rippers on downloads page and information about converting and compressing audio files on Professor David Grasmick's Web Audio site
  • Mix audio clips (fade one in and one out)
  • Use audio filters to change audio sounds -- experiment
  • Use the audio program on your computer to record your own voice, and/or other music.
  • Edit video and audio clips in Adobe Premiere.

Titles: Movies must have titles -- Minimum at beginning, middle, and ending of your video

  • Use titles to introduce topic of movie and to let audience know what is about to happen (set expectations)
  • You can relay a lot of information about your movie's "story" with titles

Premiere/Flash short video

  • File>Export>Adobe Media Encoder to open a dialog box that will allow you to export your movie as:
    • Flash FLV video
  • loaded into a SWF (AS3) movie
  • closed captioning with XML file listing frame positions and text to display
  • NOTE: IE has a built-in XML parser which displays well-formed XML, but in Firefox, you have to view source to see the XML template

Explanations:

  • Be sure to explain how you created your movie on the movie home page where you call up the movie file.
  • Include a detailed explanation of what you did, what technology you used, etc., on that home page.
  • Compare quality and sizes of both types of compression and compression levels
  • Which type of compression gives the best result at low and high compression levels?
