Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer
CIS 421 › Photoshop > Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer
Hue/Saturation
Important Adjustment Layer Step for each color adjustment:
- Create a new adjustment layer by clicking Layer>New Adjustment Layer
- Select Hue/Saturation on the popup menu.
What does it do?
adjusts the hue, saturation, and lightness values of the entire image or of individual color components.
- The Hue/Saturation command lets you adjust the hue, saturation, and lightness of the entire image or of individual color components in an image.
- Adjusting the hue, or color, represents a move around the color wheel.
- Adjusting the saturation, or purity of the color, represents a move across its radius.
- Adjusting the lightness here is not advised since adjusting lightness with curves or levels does a better job. This lightness adjustment may reduce the detail in the image.
- You can also use the Colorize option to add color to a grayscale image converted to RGB, or to an RGB image--for example, to make it look like a duotone by reducing its color values to one hue.
The two color bars in the dialog box represent the colors in their order on the color wheel.

- The hue is raised, which makes the red more orange
- The saturation is increased
- The red is darkened to give more contrast
- The changes are evident in the color bars at the bottom of the dialog box
The Edit dropdown list lets you change the hue/saturation for the all the color channels or for red, blue, or green color channels separately.
The upper color bar shows the color before the adjustment; the lower bar shows how the adjustment affects all of the hues at full saturation.
Colorize creates a black and white image with one color added
- Colorizing an image is a good way to reduce the file size
- Click the foreground color tool in the toolbar
- Select the color for colorizing in the Color Picker
- Create a hue/saturation adjustment layer
- Select the colorize layer and turn the other layers above it off
- Click the colorize checkbox
- Adjust the sliders for the effect you want
- Click OK
