Catalogue Description
MU 100 Introduction to Music – A cross-cultural study of basic elements of music and their applications; music in culture, its value, structures, and functions.

Required Background or Experience
No previous experience required.

Expected Outcomes
1. Develop introductory skills in reading and writing Western musical notation.
2. Acquire an understanding of the basic elements of music and their interrelationships, and be able to apply this understanding, cross-culturally.
3. Develop concepts of function and meaning of music in society.
4. Acquire knowledge of principles of musical transmission and acculturation in culture.
5. Acquire and understand how music is an integral part of cultures.
6. Experience elementary level of music making by singing and/or with instruments.

ATTENDANCE: Will be taken every class period. Attendance is worth 30 points. Those arriving late need to arrive through door found at the back of the classroom. Two late arrivals will count as one class absence.

QUIZES: 2 Quizes will be given. Each quiz will be worth 20 points. Make ups for any quiz will be at the discretion of the teacher.

HOMEWORK: Home work assignments will be assigned to reinforce class work. Each assignment will be worth 10 points. Late homework will be excepted up to two weeks from the date it was due. The penalty for late work is 50% of the total points.

Recorder: Each student will be instructed in how to play the recorder. There will be assignments to practice and one playing test at the end of the quarter worth 50 points.

PRESENTATIONS: You may choose one of the two possible types of presentations (100 points).
1. Discuss and demonstrate a musical instrument. You should include history of the instrument and how and when it is played. The instrument may be from Western or another culture.
2. Present some aspect of music from another culture. Either an ethnic instrument or an ethnic music/dance. This will be done by using visual aids such as video, power point, transparencies, DVD’s, MP3s, CD’s, cassette tapes and LP’s. The topic may include dance, folk music, and tradition classical music. Pop culture music may not be used except where illustrating modern use of traditional music and instruments.
Further instructions will be made available on a separate paper.

CONCERT ATTENDANCE: Everyone in the class is expected to attend one concert during the quarter. After attending the concert the student is to write a one to two page review paper of their experience. The report is worth 25 points. It is recommended that you write it no more than three weeks after attending the concert.

MID TERM AND FINAL EXAM: The Mid Term will consist of 50 fill in questions. The final exam will consist of 50 fill in questions.

GRADING: Grades are determined on the basis of the number of points you earn during this quarter.
Attendance 30 points, Assigned worksheets (7) 70 pts., Quizes (2) 40 pts., Concert Attendance 25 pts., Oral Presentation 100 pts., Recorder Quiz 50 pts., Mid-Term 100 pts., Final 100 pts. 515 Total points.

EXTRA CREDIT: You may earn extra credit points by attending a Cal Poly Music Department concert. A maximum of one extra concert may be attended. You must also write a two page review paper for this concert. It is worth 25 points.
