CLASS DESCRIPTION

By way of lecture and demonstration, readings and discussions, collaborative learning projects, peer instruction, technology, and hands-on experiences, this class will introduce the student (and potential elementary classroom teacher) to the fundamentals of music teaching in a multi-cultural society so that s/he can make a positive contribution to a child's elementary musical education. Students will be exposed to various philosophies of teaching music so that she/he can make informed musical and pedagogical judgments.

 

DISCUSSION TOPICS

Why Teach Music; Multiple Meanings of Music; Learning Theories; Methods of Teaching Music; The Child and Rhythm, Pitch, Movement, Play; The Singing/Listening/Creating Child; Music and the Integrated Curriculum.

 

PREREQUISITES

Students must pass MU401 or equivalent prior to enrolloing in Mu 402 or pass out of Mu 401 via Credit by Examination.

4th Edition - William Anderson and Joy Lawrence

Wadsworth Publishing Co., 1997

(Can be purchased at the Bronco Bookstore)

 

 

REQUIRED MATERIALS

C Soprano Recorder and VHS Video Tape

 

TEACHING POLICY

I believe that one learns most from doing. You will get out of this experience as much as you are willing to give. Music is fundamental to a child's learning experience. Please do not deny this opportunity to children because you may not be as comfortable with teaching music as you want to be.

 

EVALUATION

Each student will be evaluated on participation in class activities, assignments, lesson plans (preparation, implementation and self-evaluation based on video tape), and a written final.

 

ASSIGNMENTS

 

Will include reading assignments from the text, reading assignments from handouts, written assignments, recorder assignments, song activities, designing and implementing a lesson plan as well as a self-evaluation of the plan. .

 

EXTRA CREDIT

Ten (10) Extra Credit points will be given for an organized notebook filled with class notes, xeroxed materials received during class, all written assignments and lesson plans handed out. The notebook will be reviewed for extra credit points the day of the final. Ten (10) Extra Credit points will be given for 5 Educational Web Sites submitted. Each web site is to include title of site, web address and a one sentence description of the site.

DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENTS

1. Preliminary lesson plans: 20 min. written lesson plans for lower and upper elementary grades.

2. Review: Send by email to <ljhuff@csupomona.edu> a review of a children's song book, recording or web site. Try to review outstanding sources and give all pertinent information so that others may benefit from your review. Your review will be added to a collection of reviews that began in 1994.

3. Teach a Song: You will have the opportunity to present and teach a song (5-7 minutes) for either lower or upper elementary age students as a preliminary exercise to presenting your full lesson plan.

4. Lesson Plan: You will present a 20 minute lesson plan for the class. The exact date and grade level will be determined in class. You will write the plan, implement the plan and self-evaluate based on a videotaped recording of the presentation.

5. Written Final: A cumulative written final exam based on all readings, discussions, activities, and lesson plans.

Any assignments that are to be presented in front of the class must be presented on the assigned date. There will be no makeups allowed for these assignments. I will accept written assignments late, but there will a drop in points for each day late.
