How do I use JSTOR?

JSTOR (Journal Storage) is a web-based archival/backfile service, providing full-text searching of core scholarly journals in the fields of Economics, Ecology, History, Mathematics, Sociology, Population Studies and Political Science. The most recent issues of each journal are not included.

You may SEARCH for words or phrases in the full text of the article, or in the title, author or abstract.

Internet Address:

Click on the JSTOR link on the Library Databases page.  Click on the " Enter JSTOR " icon.

Browsing:

Find journal issues and articles by clicking on "Browse the Journals," and then the name, volume or issue of the journal that interests you.

Searching:

  • Enter basic searches of keywords, topics, titles, authors and dates by clicking on " Search the Journals" and typing information about your search requirements.
  • CONDUCT sophisticated searches using "AND", "OR" , "NEAR "
  • Perform Cross-Disciplinary searches by selecting several journals in one search.

Navigating:

Use the navigational toolbar located on the left of the screen to move through the JSTOR database.

Printing:

For remote users, optimal printing from the JSTOR collection requires the JPRINT helper application. When you are viewing an article, the "Print Article" button on the navigational toolbar leads you to a page of printing options. Users in the Library click on the print button to get the pages downloaded for printing.

Downloading the JPRINT Helper:

Remote, first-time users should download JPRINT from this page. JPRINT enables high-quality printing, much superior to printing articles using the Netscape print feature. Versions of JPRINT are available for different operating systems and browsers. You may customize the helper the first time you use JSTOR.

As a database, JSTOR combines scanned images of journal pages for display and printing with a linked text file, allowing users to conduct full-text searches through back issues of selected journals.

JSTOR's initial goal is to provide electronic access to back issues of core journals in the humanities, social sciences and sciences. There are currently over 117 scholarly journals available from the JSTOR archive, with additional titles coming in the year 2000. The most recent issues of each journal are not included.

The JSTOR archive offers complete backfiles of selected scholarly journals, which have been digitized, starting with the very first issues, many of which date from the 1800s. By the year 2000, a minimum of 100 journals in a variety of fields will be accessible in the JSTOR database. Over 2 million pages are now available, and approximately 100,000 pages are added to the database each month. Issues of journals are never "checked-out or missing"; they are always accessible, and in pristine condition.
