Library Catalog
Use the Library Catalog to find books and other materials in the Library. In addition to books, all of the Library's journals, newspapers, recordings, reports, software, and any other holdings are in the Library Catalog. Electronic journals and electronic books are also cataloged and the Library Catalog has links to the electronic materials.
Try KEYWORD searches for specific materials: steel, aluminum, plastics, composites, etc. Or try KEYWORD searches that describe an application or process:
- aircraft materials
- automobiles materials
- packaging materials
- sports equipment materials
- corrosion
- heat treating
Do not use the Library Catalog if you want to search for journal articles. Use the databases described below to search for journal articles.
For more information and hints for using the Library Catalog, see:
Library Tutorial for Engineering
Databases: Journal Articles
Databases provide subject access to journal articles, conference proceedings, technical reports, and other publications. The databases most useful for materials engineering research are described below.
- Applied Science Full Text (Wilson Web)
This is usually the best place to start for research on any engineering topic. It covers over 600 journals representing all of the engineering disciplines.
- Compendex (Engineering Village)
Over 2600 journals are indexed. Conference proceedings, technical reports, dissertations, and other documents are also covered.
- IEEE Xplore
Includes all journals and conference proceedings from IEEE and IET. IEEE standards are also included. Use this for information about materials with electrical, electronics, or computing applications.
Use Business databases for information about companies, industries, products, markets, supply and demand, or prices. We have access to many business databases, but try these first:
- ABI/Inform
- Business Full Text (WilsonWeb)
- Factiva
- Stat-USA, for economic and international trade statistics
For more information and hints for searching databases, see:

Reference Sources
The Library has many reference sources providing detailed information on materials: properties and other data, processes for manufacturing the materials, applications, and more. Most of these are only available in print; you'll have to come into the Library to use them. See Materials Engieering: Selected Print Reference Sources (pdf).
Electronic reference sources for materials engineering:
ASM Handbooks Online
Complete content of the ASM Handbook series (REF TA 459 M43). The database also includes the Metals Handbook Desk Edition and the Engineered Materials Desk Edition. In addition to properties and data you'll find information on heat treating, corrosion, machining, metalworking, and more.
Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Engineering
Based on the 27 volume print set (Ref TP 9 E685), Kirk-Othmer has extensive information on chemicals and materials, manufacturing processes, economics and production, environmental issues.
How Products Are Made
Also found in the Reference collection, Ref TS 146 H69, this is a good starting point if you need to find out what materials are used to make a product. It covers everything form everyday household items to electronics to heavy machinery.
ThomasNet
Based on the multi-volume print directory, Thomas Register of American Manufacturers. Use this website to find manufacturers of chemicals, materials, parts, components, and manufactured products. Links to manufacture' websites are included—these can be excellent sources of materials properties and data.
GE Plastics
Provides detailed technical information on General Electric's plastic products. This is one example of the many useful websites produced by manufacturers.
MatWeb, Material Property Data
A free searchable database of material property information.
Minerals Yearbook
An annual publication that reviews the mineral and material industries of the United States and foreign countries. It contains statistical data on materials and minerals and includes information on economic and technical trends and development.
NIST Chemistry WebBook
Search for physical properties and other data.

New Developments in Materials Engineering
Amazing innovations are occurring in materials science and engineering. Here are a few resources to help you learn about them.
Materials Today
Part of the ScienceDirect collection of journals. In addition to looking at Materials Today, you can also browse or search dozens of additional materials science journals in the ScienceDirect collection.
NASA Tech Briefs
Reports on innovations developed by NASA and its industry partners. Be sure to look at the Materials category.
Physics News Update
From the American Institute of Physics. Weekly reports of news from physics meetings, publications, and other sources. Browse the Archives or search to find materials science reports. Physics News Links points to other sources for science and technology news.
Advanced Materials and Processes (journals, 4th floor, Q1 S35)
From ASM International; focuses on metals technology.
Science (journals, 4th floor, Q1 S35)
This weekly publication frequently reports on new developments of interest to materials engineers. Check the "News" sections at the front of the publication. And check the "Perspectives" section for Chemistry or Materials Science reports of interest. We do not have online access to current issues of this journal.
