Music Recordings and Listening Assignments

Music Recordings  

The Library has three ONLINE music listening services:  CLASSICAL MUSIC LIBRARY, NAXOS, and  SMITHSONIAN GLOBAL SOUND. Connect to all three online music services via Library Online Resources for Music.

Library recordings are on the 5th floor, south side. Recordings have a 1 week checkout period. We recommend you BRING YOUR OWN HEADPHONES to use in the Library. Some headphones are available at the 3rd floor Circulation Desk.  

To find MUSIC RECORDINGS in the library catalog, LIMIT your search to CDs/Cassettes/Videos/DVDs.  Consult Finding Music in the Library Catalog for further information.

PROGRAM NOTES describing the music usually come with each recording. If you need more information about a particular musical piece, consult How To Find Information About A Musical Composition.

Specialized Music Recording Anthologies 

1. Anthologies of Music from Historical Periods

Use CLASSICAL MUSIC LIBRARY and choose the "Themed Playlists" link. Also, find music recordings from a specific historical period by using the anthologies listed below. For library recordings, look under a composer's name in the library catalog. For composer names per time period, consult Classical Music Composers By General Historical Periods.

2. Anthologies of World Music

Use SMITHSONIAN GLOBAL SOUND and NAXOS (World/Folk or Chinese Music). Also, find world music recordings by using the anthologies listed below. For library recordings, try a SUBJECT search in the library catalog using: Folk music [place] - or - Music [place]

3. Other Specialized Anthologies

The Library has many recordings featuring different types of music: e.g. country, folk, gospel, jazz, musical instruments, pop/rock, sound effects, etc.
