The three things to know: One, Internet addresses change; so (two) the process for finding is of utmost importance--use a "searcher" such as "Yahoo" to enter "key terms" (WWW SEARCH TOOLS on the library home page); and, third, the free stuff is presented by the Feds; expect to find fee-based services for data you would pay for in "real life". Enter address in "Netscape", "Find" button, or use "Lynx" (on the Cal Poly VAX; type Lynx at $, then G, then address at "URL to open" prompt.)

The platform to a true "world" of information from the U.S. Federal Government, this page leads to other "Services" home pages as well as providing an "Index of Subject Categories" and a "List of Subject Categories"--all links to full-text data.

The U.S. Census Bureau home page will lead you to basic publications such as the Statistical Abstract of the U.S.. This page also offers the capability to do a word search, for example enter: poverty level. This source presents statistical tables.

http://www.odci.gov/cia

Select "Publications" and reach the full text of CIA publications and handbooks. For example the CIA World Factbook profiles countries of the world--geography, population and economy. Or you can enter a keyword search from the home page.

STAT-USA/Internet is a fee-based service conducted by the Economics and Statistics Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce. For example, through this page you can search the National Trade Data Bank (NTDB).The home page includes information on how to subscribe.

This address leads to the "Internet Group", a well-designed service which includes the "Internet Business Center" "one-stop shop" for conducting business on the Internet. The "Center" has a directory linking businesses' home pages.

Apparel Merchandising and Management (AMM); directories of interest:

Fairchild's Textile & Apparel Financial Directory [year] (Ref HD 9853 F2) begins with a statistical portrait of the apparel and textile industries including comparative data on the leading USA and Canadian manufacturers. The main body of text gives basic directory and financial data on apparel or textile companies, including some from outside North America. There are indexes for companies and by trademark.

The Fashion Guide; International Designer Directory (Ref TT 495 F37 [year]) is arranged by country, presenting the major designers in France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, The UK, and the USA. In addition the directory leads to buyers, associations and federations, and the fashion press in each country. There is a detailed index (and numerous attractive color ads).

Sheldon's Retail Directory of the United States and Canada and Phelon's Resident Buyers and Merchandise Brokers (Ref HF 5429.3 S52 [year]) is a vital directory of department stores and other retail stores and store chains because, in addition to basic directory information such as address and phone number it gives the name of the buyer for each type of product (women's, bridal, sportswear, and etc.). The stores are by state or Canadian province. The resident buyers and merchandise brokers are in a separate section, for New York City and then for the rest of the country. The index by company name says whether the company uses a resident buyer, and who.

The [year] TALA Directory (Ref TS 1312 T24); TALA means "Textile Association of Los Angeles" and includes a directory of members, with pictures. However, in addition to listing textile firms and manufactures, by type, in Los Angeles and vicinity, TALA also lists manufacturers for the San Francisco area and for Washington and Oregon. The table of contents leads to the listings by type of product; some sections are marked by tabs. The volume concludes with a detailed glossary of textile terms.

The Chain Store Guides Information Service publishes yearly a series of retail directories known as Chain Store Guides (CSG). These typically include the headquarters address, product lines, estimated sales, key personnel, and number of stores for retailers of all types. These directories usually include a brief statistical overview of the particular industry covered. The University Library subscribes to these CSG directories of interest to AMM:
