Library Update - Fall 2003

THE NEXT CHAPTER - Library Building Addition Project

This summer, the Library faculty and staff selected the name The Next Chapter, from among several suggestions as the theme for the upcoming Library building addition project.

The University Library, recognized by many as the “intellectual heart of the campus”, currently houses a collection exceeding 3 million items in 205,000 square feet of floor space.  The building will undergo a facelift in two phases.  Phase I will feature the addition of 135,000 GSF of “people space” that will accommodate increasing enrollment.  The addition will address the need to provide state of the art information stations, library instructional spaces, enhanced reading areas, group study rooms, academic lectures spaces, 24-hour study spaces and much more.

Please direct questions or comments regarding the Next Chapter, Library Building Addition Project, to: Andrew Naranjo, Library Addition Project Manager,  libaddproj@csupomona.edu.

THE LIBRARY HAS GONE CASHLESS!

The Library is now offering more secure, hassle-free options for payment of fines, lost books, etc.  Telecheck electronic check acceptance service is now available at Cal Poly Pomona Library Circulation Desk.  Credit cards, debit cards (with Visa or MasterCard logo), money orders, or checks are the only acceptable method of payment in the library. Cash will no longer be accepted for payment on any transaction.

LIBRARY PINS PROVIDE EASIER REMOTE ACCESS TO LIBRARY RESOURCES & DATABASES

You can access the University Library’s subscription databases, electronic books, and electronic journals from off campus by registering for a library PIN number.  The PIN will protect you from someone else using your card illegally. If your LIBRARY / BRONCO ACCESS CARD is lost or stolen and is used by someone else, you are LIABLE for the item cost and processing fee of each transaction incurred. Protect your card and create your PIN.

All currently enrolled students are automatically registered with the Library. Faculty and staff who have not yet registered with the Library, will need to come to the Library Circulation Desk to register. Once you have registered, you may create your own library PIN number by using the My Library Account feature from the Library’s home page (http://www.csupomona.edu/~library/).

Once you have created your PIN number, you can access the My Library Account function to check your library activities and to renew books and other functions.

E-Z RESEARCH WORKSHOPS

During Fall Quarter 2003 , the library is presenting E-Z Research Workshops to teach useful guidelines for effective selection and use of databases for research. The content of each workshop will be the same. The workshops are designed to provide knowledge that may improve the quality of course work , decrease frustration with research, and save time.

Workshop dates and times are:

  • Fridays from 1-2:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 and Nov. 14
  • Saturdays from 11-12:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 and Nov. 22

These workshops are designed to provide students with knowledge that may improve the quality of their course work, decrease their frustration with research, and save them time. Students can sign up for a workshop by calling 909-869-3076, or stopping by Room 104 (The Reference/Instruction Office) on the First Floor of the Library.

Check out SEARCH+

SEARCH+ allows you to select and simultaneously search multiple databases -- indexes, library catalogs and other resources -- using one common search interface.

Using SEARCH+ you can:

  • Get a list of databases relevant to your subject by selecting your subject from the "Find a Database By Subject" section.
  • Select a database by title if you already know the name of the database you need.
  • Select and search up to five databases at once.
  • Merge duplicate records from multiple databases.
  • Search each database using its own search interface as an option.
  • Link directly to the online full text of each record if available using SFX.
  • View e-journals available at Cal Poly Pomona University Library using SFX
  • Create custom lists that are available in your Personal Account when you login -- Personal Database List, Personal e-Journal List and Alert Profiles.
  • Locate print and online full text journals available at Cal Poly Pomona University Library by using SFX
  • Request items not available full text online and not owned by this Library.
  • Store and manage records that you select in your own personal E-Shelf .

Please note that this service is still under development and its name, look and capabilities will be changing. To access Search+ from off-campus you need a Library PIN. To give yourself a Library PIN click on the "PIN number" link from the library home page.

CMS DigiNet PROVIDES PHOTOCOPY SERVICE AT THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

The University Library has a new vendor for photocopy, color print, and microform print services — CMS, Inc. has replaced IKON as the Library’s photocopy/print service provider effective June 2003.   CMS will provide fee-based photocopy, microform print, and color print services.  All new digital equipment has been installed.

The photocopy/print services will be self-service with instructions posted on the equipment, card dispensers, and print release stations. Paper and toner will be checked frequently to maintain high performance and availability to patrons.  Assistance will be available by calling X3075 or by inquiring at the 1st Floor Circulation Desk.

Photocopy/print cards can be purchased from two card dispenser locations, one on the 1st Floor and one on the 2nd Floor. Questions on this new service should be directed to Larry Huizar at 909/869-3097.

NEED A GIFT IDEA FOR THE HOLIDAYS?

This heirloom-quality coffee-table book tells the story of a distinctive American university whose origins date back to the Gold Rush of 1849.
