We at the Library are preparing for a very exciting prospect in FY 2003-04. By now you are all probably aware of the passage of Proposition 47, "The Kindergarten-University Public Education Facilities Bond Act of 2002." This was a very important decision for the Library, since the bond has permitted us to move forward with plans for a long-awaited $33.2 million renovation and expansion of the existing building!
This summer, the Library faculty and staff selected the name The Next Chapter, from among several suggestions as the theme for the building project.
The University Library, recognized by many as the "intellectual heart of the campus" currently houses a collection exceeding 3 million items in 205,000 square feet of floor space. The building will undergo a facelift in two phases. Phase I will feature the addition of 135,000 GSF of "people space" that will accommodate increasing enrollment. The addition will address the need to provide state of the art information stations, library instructional spaces, enhanced reading areas, group study rooms, academic lectures spaces, 24-hour study spaces and much more.
