We at the Library are preparing for a very exciting project for which construction will begin Winter of 2006. By now you are all probably aware of the passage of Proposition 47, “The Kindergarten-University Public Education Facilities Bond Act of 2002.” This was a very important decision for the Library, since the bond has provided the Library with $33.2 million of funding to move forward with plans for a long-awaited renovation and expansion of the existing building!

The Library faculty and staff selected the name The Next Chapter, from among several suggestions as the theme for the building project.

The University Library, recognized by many as the “intellectual heart of the campus” currently houses a collection exceeding 3 million items in 205,000 square feet of floor space. The building will undergo a facelift in two phases. Phase I will feature the addition of 100,922 GSF of “people space” and 91,092 GSF of renovation that will accommodate increasing enrollment. Phase II will feature the complete renovation of the upper three floors of the Library building which will include a new façade to the existing building.

In Phase I, the addition will address the need to provide state of the art information stations, library instructional spaces, enhanced reading areas, group study rooms, academic lectures spaces, 24-hour study spaces and much more. Key featured areas in the Library will include a two-story volume Grand Reading Room, a 36 workstation Learning Commons, and a 53 workstation Productivity Center.

When the Phase I portion of the project is complete the Library will also feature:

  • A total of 307,277 gross square feet
  • Additional 2,067 seats, including table seating, lounge seating, workstation seating, and study carrels
  • 23 additional group study rooms - some will feature audio/visual equipment for multimedia presentations
  • 5 Group Listening Rooms
  • 12 listening/viewing stations
  • (1) 65 person Library Information Learning Center
  • (1) 20 person Library Information Learning Center
  • 102 seat 24 hour study lab with 78 workstations
  • 215 additional public workstations total plus 22 express stations
  • 49 person multipurpose room for special events
  • New and additional open and compact shelving
  • 7 Academic Classrooms – includes (1) 120 person tiered classroom, when combined with the rest of the classrooms will be able to accommodate a total of 1,068 FTE
  • wireless access throughout the building
  • A welcome desk
  • 3 service desks, which include a Reference Desk combined with a Technology Help Desk, Circulation Desk, and a Media/Reserve Desk.
  • A café featuring wireless accessibility with indoor and outdoor seating
