Course goals:

The purpose of this course is to:
  1. to give students an opportunity to develop and improve their oral proficiency in French;
  2. to improve students' ability to express themselves in French;
  3. to develop and improve students' written proficiency in French;
  4. to promote vocabulary acquisition;
  5. to increase the understanding and appreciation of the culture of the French and that of the people of the Francophone countries.

Course expectations:

In order to be achieved successfully, the above goals require the student's total cooperation. Regular class attendance, active class participation, timely preparation of reading assignments and independent, daily review of vocabulary and structures are key ingredients to success.

Assignments:

Readings: The student is expected to prepare the assigned readings prior to each class.
Writing:The student is expected to complete each written assignment in a timely fashion. Each composition will consist of two drafts: a first draft to be read and critiqued by a classmate; a second draft to posted to the discussion list on the web. In addition to these assignments, there will be spontaneous, ungraded writing done in class.
CD-ROM Meurtre à Cinet: The students in the class will be participating in a murder mystery conducted via e-mail and the Internet. This will require frequent e-mail contact with classmates. All e-mail interaction is to be conducted in French.
Assessment: To monitor student perception of progress and attitude to the teaching and learning process, students will be asked to complete pre and post survey questions as well as formative questions every two weeks. To ensure participation in the assessment process, points will be assigned to completed questionnaires.
Final Project: There will be a final project (oral or written) relating to the murder mystery.

Exams:

Exams: There will be frequent vocabulary quizzes but no mid-term. The final exam will consist of an oral interview and a written essay.

Grading:

Given the nature of language learning where great importance is attached to daily performance, the grading system adopted for this course is designed to reflect that emphasis:
  1. Class participation, web murder mystery participation: 1/3
  2. Written assignments: 1/3
  3. Final interview and essay: 1/3
