The assessment design uses a non-linear method of data collection to determine information competence. The method is phone interviews based on a scenario corresponding to the CSU-identified information competencies and selected questions covering related areas. The scenarios (problems or tasks) are the heart of the assessment, and they are designed to allow students to demonstrate the steps they would take to solve the information problem presented by the scenario. The interviewers chart student's responses to the scenarios into a carefully designed matrix.
