fingerprint_graphic     Forensic Science Sources in the Cal Poly Library
Forensic science is a multidisciplinary field (which includes the field of Forensic anthropology) and we do not have a major indexing tool or bibliographic database that provides thorough coverage.  It is, therefore, a difficult subject area in which to do a thorough search.

Databases
For most of our databases, it is important to know how to use Find It! See using Find It! for help.

Google Scholar
Google Scholar is not normally a recommended source, but in this case, due to the scattered nature of the subject, it is one way of searching a lot of our subscriptions at one time that you cannot do otherwise. If you are searching from on campus, a lot of the results will click through to full text, as Google is sensitive to our paid subscriptions.  If you are searching from off campus, be very careful to follow the instructions on the Help With Google Scholar page for installing our version of SFX on your browser.  (Seeusing Find It! for help with Find It! ittself). Even with Find It! installed, you may run into a lot of items that are difficult to obtain.
Google Crossref

Crossref works best if you are accessing it from on campus.  On campus, a lot of the results will click through to full text results, as Crossref is sensitive to our paid subscriptions. This would make for a faster overall search than Google Scholar, and it does not have as many books or patents, so there are a higher proportion of  journal articles. Use any of the links below, they all search the same database:

Crossref is a probably a subset of Google Scholar, so if you searched Google Scholar thoroughly, you probably don't have to bother with Crossref.

Medline
Find articles relating to the medical/laboratory aspects of forensics with a biological connection, eg. DNA analysis.
Biological Abstracts
Find articles related to the biological sciences. This index is useful for topics related to humans, animals, plants, and insects; e.g. forensic entomology, wildlife forensics, DNA analysis. I find this product  my first choice for medical/biological related topics and Medline my second choice in that Biological Abstracts has a better interface and is sensitive to our paid subscriptions.
Academic Search Elite
Includes articles from a wide sweep of journals including the FBI law Enforcement Bulletin.
ABI/Inform
An index to articles (journal and newspaper) in business, this index is useful for finding articles relating to security management issues.
SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts)
Covering the literature in chemistry from 1907 to the present, use this index to find articles relating to any topic in chemistry, including such analytical methods as mass spectrometry, ink analysis, DNA analysis, and much more. Not available remotely, you must come into the library to use this product. SciFinder Scholar User Guide: Bibliographic Searching.
Separate E-journal publishers

You could search the following ejournal publishers, as they all have forensic journals:

  • Blackwell Synergy Journals
  • Oxford Journals
  • SAGE Journals Online
  • Science Direct
  • SpringerLink Journals
  • Wiley Interscience

Journals
Try searching the Databases first; you may get enough on your subject that way. You might use these journal links below if you were limited to these particular journals or if you had a bibliographic citation to a particular article in one of these journals.  Looking though these journals one by one can be a laborious process. Full text availability of these journals subject to change without notice.

Note: the Journal of the American Forensic Association, of which we have some old issues, is not about Forensic Science, but about the lesser used meaning of the word "forensics" : "The art or study of formal debate; argumentation."
