During Fall 2008, the Cal Poly Pomona University Library embarked on a review of its Reference Services. Specifically, we examined the types of reference questions that our patrons were asking at our Research Help Desk to see whether the services we provided were adequate for their needs. In addition, we conducted a survey of libraries at institutions similar to Cal Poly Pomona in student FTEs and degrees to find out how they were conducting their Reference Services.
Cal Poly Pomona is a large, four-year, primarily non-residential university. Our current enrollment is 19,885. Our Carnegie classification is Master's Universities and Colleges I: "These institutions typically offer a wide range of baccalaureate programs, and they are committed to graduate education through the master's degree. During the period studied, they awarded 40 or more master's degrees per year across three or more disciplines" (CollegeSource, login with library password).
During the regular academic year, the University Library is open 86.5 hours a week, Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m.
Our Research Help Desk, located on the 2nd floor in the Information Commons, is staffed by a reference librarian or staff 47 hours a week, Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Help is given in person, by phone, and via chat. Questions are referred as necessary. For questions related to a specific field, patrons are usually given the phone and email for the appropriate Subject Librarian.
Help is also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via the AskNOW virtual librarian service, part of the nation-wide Questionpoint reference cooperative service in which our reference librarians and staff participate 5 hours a week.
