Tips for an Effective Job Search

Review Job Opportunities Listing Frequently

We add new jobs to our listings on a weekly basis. Please see Current Job Opportunities Listing for the up to date information on our job openings for management and staff positions.

Pay Close Attention To The Qualifications Section

You should customize your application materials to show how your skills and experiences match the requirements (both required and preferred) and the responsibilities outlined in the qualifications section of the recruitment posting. If you don't have the direct skills listed in the qualifications section, but feel that your skills or experiences are transferable, then clearly state that in your application materials.

Make Note of the Specific Recruitment Number

Please make note of the recruitment number and job title for each specific position to which you applying. When submitting your application materials or when corresponding with our office, you will be asked for the recruitment number.

Proofread Your Application Materials Carefully

If possible, have a friend or colleague proofread it for you as well. Remember that your application materials don't just represent your qualifications, job experience, and accomplishments--they also represent your writing skills, the quality of work that you can produce, and your attention to detail. Show your potential employer your very best, right from the start of your job search.

Be Aware Of Recruitment Closing Date

Make every effort to submit your materials before the recruitment closing date. Your application materials may not be considered if they are received by Human Resources after the recruitment closing date.

Be Patient

Due to the high volume of applications we receive, it is not possible to respond directly to all applicants, only to those whose candidacy is being pursued. Also, Cal Poly Pomona is a large institution with many units. The length of the recruitment process will vary depending on the position and the department. Therefore, your patience is greatly appreciated.

Maximize Your Options

Continue to apply for all the jobs that interest you and that you are qualified for. This is particularly important given the long recruitment cycle at Cal Poly Pomona - while you're waiting to hear back from one unit, you could wind up being hired by another!
