THE DEPARTMENT 

University Housing Services is responsible for delivering a comprehensive student housing experience, which includes operations in residential life, business operations, facilities management, conference services, and information systems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The Lead Building Service Engineer (BSE) will provide lead work, direction and training to maintenance staff and student workers; will monitor and distribute all work orders; perform maintenance on boilers, chillers, cooling towers, heating systems, building plumbing and electrical systems, pumps, exhaust fans, compressors, water treatment systems controls, kitchen equipment and all other mechanical equipment while maintaining all necessary documentation in conjunction with the requirements of SCAQMD and OSHA.  The incumbent performs hands on preventative maintenance on equipment while inspecting and maintaining all fire safety equipment including fire extinguishers, pull stations, alarm panels, smoke detectors, battery replacement; must be able to research and order a variety of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and a/c parts; respond to periodic calls from residents and staff for adjustments of mechanical equipment to achieve air flow, temperature and humidity balances for individual rooms, building areas or buildings while also responding to emergency work orders.  The incumbent will oversee, coordinate and monitor the call back schedule for all UHS facilities emergency related calls including mechanical, electrical, lockouts, floods and building fires as well as be on call; will be the point person in the absence of the Associate Director of Facilities.  The lead BSE will coordinate and follow up on all safety inspections, OSHA inspections, SCAQMD compliance issues and monitor the computerized energy management system; must participate in all UHS sponsored and sanctioned events; committee assignments and student related move in and move out functions as well as perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Four(4) or more  years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems or the equivalent combination of formal course work in mechanical technology and hands-on experience. Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and SCAQMD Refrigeration/Recovery Certification.

Finalists for this position may be required to submit to and successfully pass a background check prior to being hired.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working in a university, school or hotel environment; must have at least five (5) years of experience working in a similar working environment with similar equipment; must have working knowledge of the following mechanical equipment: walk in refrigerators, freezers, steam and gas boilers, chillers, air handler units, and a variety of food service equipment; must be knowledgeable in the operation, maintenance and repair of HVAC systems and hot water boilers; must have a thorough understanding in the operations of Energy Management Systems; be skilled in the ability to inspect, diagnose and repair HVAC equipment; five years of increasingly responsible experience in the installation, adjustment, maintenance and repair of commercial and domestic refrigeration, air conditioning systems, boilers, involving modulatory and safety controls, thermostats, humidifiers, and duct stats; must have a full understanding of fire safety related equipment.
