By providing student-centered, quality medical, psychological, and health education services to our diverse community the mission of the Student Heath and Counseling Services (SHCS) is to promote academic and personal success and help students develop healthy lifestyles. The department provides cost effective care that will assist students with information and the skills necessary to develop a healthy lifestyle while emphasizing a developmental and holistic approach to mental, physical health and wellness designed to facilitate growth, retention and graduation of students.
The psychiatrist performs medical/psychiatric evaluations and provides care for students with psychiatric disorders; interviews and consults on urgent cases when requested to do so by Student and or Counseling Services staff; assists in the disposition of patient care cases;; prescribes and monitors psychotropic medication advising patients of potential benefits and side effects and provides instruction on drug administration and actions to take in the event of side effects. The incumbent orders lab tests; supplies ongoing treatment and follow-up; returns uncomplicated cases to primary care providers; and educates Student Health and Counseling Services providers on management of uncomplicated psychiatric disorders. The incumbent collaborates directly with student health and counseling services staff for an interdisciplinary approach to mental health cases; assures appropriate management of psychiatric cases; and is responsible for assuring continuous and ongoing quality, accessibility and safety of psychiatric services to the patients. The incumbent maintains professional standards of documentation with written chart notes that are succinct, legible and accurate and completed in a timely fashion; provides psychiatric consultation to SHCS clinicians and Counseling Center professionals; and collaborates with the Associate Director for Counseling Services to conduct a needs assessment to identify the type of support a student may need when returning to campus after an interim suspension. The incumbent contributes to the establishment of policy regarding psychiatric diagnosis, treatment, referral, confidentiality, release of information to and from outside professional sources, contributes to review of mental health records according to departmental standards, policies and procedures, quality of care issues and QI studies; reports to the Executive Director or Clinical Director on all issues which may impact client care and safety and contributes to their resolution; and performs other duties as assigned.
Graduate of an accredited Medical School; current license to practice medicine in the state of California; current board certification in the specialty of psychiatry; and possession of federal DEA license for prescribing physician. The candidate must have successful completion of a Psychiatry Residency at an ACGME accredited program and experience working in an outpatient psychiatric setting. Thorough knowledge of and ability to effectively apply principles and methods essential to psychiatry, and the diagnosis and treatment of common medical disorders, and in the assessment and response to emergency situations; cultural competence in delivering mental health care; thorough knowledge of local, state, and national laws and regulations pertaining to the medical field and psychiatry. Thorough knowledge of applicable professional ethics and standards; ability and specialized skill to serve as a mentor and resource consultant for other health center personnel and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to maintain quality clinical services for students facing complex acute and chronic mental health conditions; and proficiency with Electronic Medical Records System (preferably Point & Click) is preferred. The candidate must have effective administrative skills in decision making, conflict resolution; ability to remain calm and take action in crisis/emergency situations; ability to initiate, develop organize and follow-through on projects; and the ability to identify and work independently and collaboratively with others. Some evenings and weekend hours may be required to address university community needs.
