THE DEPARTMENT 

The Chemistry Department is located within the College of Science and has the responsibility of providing instruction (both lecture and laboratory) for its majors and support for all other major programs requiring chemistry. The department maintains equipment, materials, chemicals and stockrooms in Building 3, 4, and 8 to meet program needs. The department employs approximately 50 individuals classified as tenure-track faculty, lectures, TAs and staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The General Chemistry Stockroom Technician prepares chemical solutions and materials for instructional labs and chemical demonstrations requested by faculty and lab maintenance; physically set up and take down general chemistry laboratories that are changed as needed under direction of stockroom lead, IST II for Building 4 and faculty coordinator for general chemistry. The incumbent may assist other IST II’s in the department as needed to cover areas outside general chemistry; monitor stockroom window, handle check in/check out of chemicals equipment and associated record keeping; maintain chemical and lab equipment inventory; assist with record keeping and collection of hazardous materials as mandated by Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) regulations; assist in leading student assistants under direction of stockroom manager (IST II) and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Equivalent to four (4) years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience
OR
Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience
OR
Equivalent to two years experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline; ability to move, handle, lift crates (containers) and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs; wear appropriate safety equipment as circumstances may require and/or require by safety regulations.  Finalists for this position may be required to submit to and successfully pass a Live Scan criminal records check prior to being hired.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Experience working in a chemistry stockroom; good oral and written communications skills as well as good interpersonal skills dealing with students, faculty and staff.
