University Housing Services is responsible for delivering a comprehensive student housing experience which includes operations in residential life, business operations, facilities management, conference services, and information systems.
The Custodian cleans and maintains residence halls restrooms/showers; cleans and polishes sinks; cleans and disinfect commodes, cleans and disinfects urinals, cleans mirrors, dusts, removes graffiti, cleans partitions, sweeps and mops quarry tile floors, terrazzo floors, cleans and disinfects shower curtains, empties waste receptacles; checks and fills dispensers when needed. The Custodian washes walls, ceilings, air-vents and lockers; cleans and maintains exterior/interior stairwells, entryways, and landings; sweeps, mops, dusts, removes gum, empties trash receptacles, cleans cigarette urns, washes windows, dusts window ledges, cleans and polishes handrails, vacuums entry mats, cleans doors, cleans doorjambs and removes graffiti. The Custodian cleans and maintains residence hallways, lounges, laundry rooms, and offices; spot clean walls, cleans drinking fountains, mirrors, telephone booths, microwaves, carpet-spotting, vacuums, cleans chalkboard. The Custodian safely handles and uses cleaning chemicals, safely uses equipment and hand tools, safeguard building and/or equipment from unauthorized use, cooperates with hall staff and students in creating a safe and clean environment, works in team/crews, stocks custodial supplies, initiates and completes work orders. The Custodian perform floor care in residence hall, uses of various floor care equipment i.e. vacuums, hot water extractor, wet vacuum, 175 RPM floor machine; carpet extraction, stripping and scrubbing resilient tile and asphalt tile floors, carpet spotting, carpet repairs, spray buffing, applying floor finish and bonnet cleaning. Cleans and maintains student rooms including windows, vertical blinds, polishes and cleans furniture, washes walls, ceilings, light fixtures, doors, doorjambs as well as carpet spotting. Performs light maintenance in residence hall facilities including lamp replacement, unclog commodes/urinals. The Custodian services vacuum cleaners, i.e. replaces belt, empties vacuum bag, as well as cleans brushes; moves/set-ups furniture, tables, chairs and miscellaneous furniture. Participates and serves various campus and departments committees, participates and attends staff meetings, retreats and other training sessions as well as performs other duties as assigned.
Basic knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in custodial work. Ability to read and write at a level appropriate for the duties of the position; follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety; operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position; use custodial systems such as those used to track work orders and two-way radios for communication; observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required; perform work involving regular physical activity; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships; ability to safely move up to 50 lbs and possess a valid driver license; available for custodial weekend coverage i.e. student check-in, room assessment, Conference Services and on call custodial emergency. Finalists for this position may be required to submit to and successfully pass a Live Scan criminal records check prior to being hired.
Ability to operate the following equipment: floor machine, self-contained carpet extractor and vacuum. Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and their proper use; ability to work independently and with team members; ability to accept change in regularly scheduled work shifts and High School Diploma or its equivalent desired.
