The Mechanical Engineering Department is one of seven academic departments in the College of Engineering. The program offers a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, and currently serves approximately 1300 students.
The Equipment Technician will organize and document all technical services required for all laboratories, plan and schedule jobs, determine priorities, provide estimates of time required, completion date, and materials required, provide weekly reports on all laboratory activities to the Mechanical Engineering Department Chair and/or lab committee chair. The incumbent will perform all set up, maintenance, and repair of the equipment, establishing regular calibration and maintenance schedules in consultation with the faculty member in charge; document calibration and maintenance of all laboratory instruments; plan supply requirements for experiments, calculating the amount of gases, oils, test specimens required; generate purchase orders for supplies as required; ensure supplies and equipment for the teaching laboratories are recorded and inventoried. The incumbent will indicate housing locators of all purchases, materials and supplies; coordinate University contractor services and serve as liaison for modifications or repairs to laboratory infrastructure and equipment. The incumbent will assist in the development of experiments; perform a variety of fabrication tasks; interface software and hardware in the computer-controlled equipments and data acquisition systems; read and interpret engineering drawings; maintain compliance with safety regulations in all laboratories and inspect laboratories on a regular basis to determine maintenance, safety, and repair needs; maintain up to date expertise and knowledge of new equipment and keep all documentation of equipment organized and available to faculty, students, and staff. The incumbent will design and construct unique equipment and systems for student and faculty use in both research and instructions; act as a resource to department faculty in the operation of laboratory equipment; consult with vendors, select and purchase new equipment and supplies for the operation and maintenance of all department facilities; specify and recommend budget items; plan purchases within budgetary restraints, keeping labs operating smoothly, maintain inventory records and equipment operating manuals; support other departments and programs laboratories as directed by the Chair of ME or the Dean of the College and perform other duties as assigned.
Equivalent to three years of progressively responsible journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned, including one year involving design modifications and fabrication of complex and high technical equipment OR equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related equipment experience as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the related experience OR equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned; completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Mobility and dexterity to work with machinery and equipment including molten metals; ability to communicate effectively in person, via telephone and email to students, faculty, staff and vendors; ability to transport materials using material handling equipment (ex: forklift, push carts and state owned vehicles). Finalists for this position may be required to submit to and successfully pass a Live Scan criminal records check prior to being hired.
Strongly preferred Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering or Engineering Technology. Over five (5) years of work experience as a mechanical technician in an academic institution, laboratory, testing facility, or manufacturing/industrial/commercial facility.
