The Office of Student Life and Cultural Centers (OSLCC) exist to support student development, cultural enhancement, social justice and academic excellence. The office adheres to the premises that student involvement results in retention, improved academic performance and leadership.
Under the general direction of the Director of the Office of Student Life and Cultural Centers, the Coordinator of the Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education is responsible for implementing student support programs for the Xicano/Latino community; coordinating campus-wide educational programs for the student community at Cal Poly Pomona; assisting in leadership programs; selection and training of student assistants and volunteers; and the day to day operations of the facility. The incumbent acts as a liaison to student groups and assists them in their program design, planning and implementation; serve as a liaison to the Academic Councils and their advisors; develop fundraising opportunities for the Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education; and oversee the annual programming budget. The incumbent is responsible for the development and implementation of the RAZA Graduation Celebration and various outreach and recruitment events; develop and maintain support services and programs to increase retention of Zicano/Latino students; coordinate and implement fundraisers; develop and present forums (courses, seminars, workshops) which concentrate on providing ethnic student leaders with avenues to gain personal and organizational skills; and if necessary, serve as instructor for REACH & Multicultural Leadership Class. The incumbent will provide and engage in programs, activities and forums which outreach to Cal Poly Pomona faculty, staff, students and the surrounding community; prepare and present information and training sessions on multicultural issues; develop and produce publicity (i.e., fliers, banners, ads) for events and activities; responsible for the annual forecasting of budget needs and projections; administer, monitor, and disburse State, ASI, Foundation, grant and lottery funds; provide direction, guidance, and organization; lead the work of graduate and undergraduate interns, and perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field; including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution AND three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience (A Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Student Personnel or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience; A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for three years of the required professional experience.) General knowledge of Xicano/Latino cultures; thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques and of the organizational procedures and activities of the related programs; ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; and the ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. The candidate must have the ability to determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. The candidate must have the ability to perform in-depth analysis of individual students or group problems of considerable complexity; identify problems and alternative solutions available without assistance from guidelines and formulas; analyze individual student or group situations thoroughly; and plan, develop, and conduct Student Services related instructional sessions, courses and/or seminars.
A Master’s degree is highly preferred. The candidate must be able to adjust approaches and techniques in the face of unpredictable responses and rapidly changing circumstances and demonstrated commitment to all issues of diversity.
