The Chemistry Department is located within the College of Science and has the responsibility of providing instruction (both lecture and laboratory) for its majors and support for all other major programs requiring chemistry. The department maintains equipment, materials, chemicals, and stockrooms in Building 3, 4, and 8 to meet program needs. The department employs approximately 50 individuals as tenure-track faculty, lecturers, TAs, and staff. The department also has a major responsibility for implementing, monitoring and maintaining Environmental Health & Safety regulations mandated by local, state and federal agencies.
The Health and Safety Technician provides instructional technical support for the management of the Chemistry Department's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) program and to manage the Chemistry Department's stockroom hazardous waste facilities. This involves monitoring safety protocols, training, conducting inspections, and taking appropriate steps to maintain compliance. Acts as liaison and consultant with campus EH&S office to meet regulatory requirements. Manages all internal and mandated record keeping to satisfy local/campus, CSU, and state safety auditors. In close consultation with department faculty and in coordination with other stockroom staff, maintains the day-to-day operation of the Chemistry Department Stockrooms. Coordinates with other stockroom staff, provides stockroom support for the undergraduate laboratory courses, including the preparation of reagents and equipment. Coordinates and assists department faculty, staff, and students with respect to EH&S responsibilities, e.g. labeling, inspections, and inventory. Prepares the Organic Chemistry teaching laboratories and orders organic laboratory supplies as needed. Collects, labels, and consolidates waste. Coordinates, schedules, and documents, waste pick-up with EH&S emergencies and supervises student assistants. Conducts and organizes safety and hazardous waste inspections and provides training to other personnel/student researchers with specific responsibilities in teaching/research labs and stockrooms. Acts as liaison with EH&S office for express purpose of preparing all hazardous waste or environmental inspection reports, audits and records as required by local, state, and federal regulatory agencies. Work effectively with EH&S office and college personnel to develop new and more efficient procedures related to chemical inventory and waste management.
Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience OR Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience OR Equivalent to three years experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned. Knowledge of the principles of performing support services. Ability to plan organize, and schedule activities; ability to operate technical equipment related to the discipline; ability to maintain records; ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment.
Fundamental knowledge of chemistry, and knowledge of the academic needs of students, academic departments, colleges, and curricula. Experience managing electronic databases.
