Hickman, The Jepson Manual: Higher Plants of California - the new standard reference for California plants, a key to more different plants than most people see in a lifetime. Don't let it intimidate you - you'll learn how to use it by the time the course is over. The manual is available from:

Objectives
- Identification of California native and naturalized plants by the use of dichotomous keys.
- Recognition of common California flowering plant families.
- Understanding of the basic principles of classification and nomenclature as they relate to plants.
- Understanding of and basic proficiency with the methodology of floristic biology, including collection, specimen preparation, curation, and data organization.
Grading
- Tests and quizzes (key quizzes and others) - 1/3 of grade
- Project: Flora of Cal Poly Pomona - 1/3 of grade
- Project: Wikipedia - 1/3 of grade
Grading scale
90-100% = A; 80-90% = B; 70-80% = C; 60-70% = D.
Prerequisites
BOT 124, BOT 201, or another course in general botany.
