BIO 530 - Mechanisms of Speciation

Recommended Texts:

Ereshefsky, The Units of Evolution (MIT Press). A compendium of classic papers dealing with the nature of species.

Objectives:

Gain an understanding of the species as a basic unit of the evolutionary process, the mechanisms by which new species arise, and the importance of species in macroevolutionary processes.

Grading:

Students will prepare several short essays on topics discussed during the quarter, and will present one topic to their classmates.

Grading scale:

Subjective and holistic, like the Graduation Writing Test. The grade is based on performance in short essays, the classroom presentation, and participation.

Prerequisites:

BIO 213, BIO 325, BIO 303; or consent of instructor.
