The Infrastructure Terminal Resources Project (ITRP) is a collaboration of the CSU Chancellor’s Office, I&IT and the university’s College and departmental technicians to bring faster networking to the campus community.
The Infrastructure Terminal Resources Project (ITRP) is an ongoing effort to maintain campus baseline network infrastructure as technology advances and user needs evolve, beginning with ITRP 1. To that end, The California State University (CSU) has planned for a refresh of each campus network infrastructure on a cyclical basis to ensure that the network infrastructure continues to keep pace with technology and meet the changing needs of CSU students, faculty and staff. This endeavor is known as the ITRP Refresh Program and the first cycle is called ITRP 2.
The goal of the ITRP Refresh Program is to meet the evolving needs of CSU students, faculty and staff by providing a stable, robust, secure baseline IP network infrastructure that serves as the foundation for enabling the CSU Integrated Technology Strategy Outcomes: personal productivity, excellence in learning and teaching, quality of student experiences and administrative productivity and quality.
ITRP 2 addresses the following five components:
Phase I of the ITRP 2 Network Security component has already been partially completed. New Juniper firewalls were deployed at the campus’ connection to the Internet in 2008. An intrusion detection and prevention system (IDS/IPS), a system that monitors the network for malicious or unwanted activity and can then act to block such activity, is scheduled to be activated in the summer of 2009.
Phase II of the ITRP2 Network Security component will involve installing a second set of Juniper firewalls and IDS/IPS to protect the central server farm. These devices are scheduled to be deployed before the end of the calendar year 2009.
Beginning in April 2009, Cal Poly Pomona network staff will be working with our networking vendor, AT&T, to upgrade aged network equipment in state-owned facilities. This upgrade will help to ensure the stability and performance of the campus network for several more years. The upgrade process will likely last into June of 2009.

The ITRP 2 project will upgrade Cal Poly’s existing wireless. Using wireless technology from Aruba Networks, Inc., a comprehensive wireless network will be deployed across all state-owned facilities. The goals of the deployment are to ensure one hundred percent coverage in these facilities. The installation of this wireless network will coincide with the Routing/Switching upgrade and will begin in April 2009 and continue through the summer. The new wireless infrastructure will also include advanced wireless security and management tools to help I&IT provide the best possible wireless networking performance to the community.
The Network Management System and Network Infrastructure Asset Management System components of ITRP 2 are both efforts to increase the manageability of the campus network. By improving the tools with which I&IT monitors and maintains the network these efforts will improve the quality and performance of the network for the community. The implementation date of these components has yet to be scheduled.
The Virtual Local Access Networks (vLANs) have been reconfigured to provide greater stability and safety. For more information, visit:
