Reference Desk Telephones - Policy
  • Only for use by Reference staff - The line has to stay open for incoming calls. Direct patron to other campus phones in building or to pay phones.
  • Patrons in the library have priority over telephone inquiries.
  • We do not check to see if a circulating book is actually on the shelf.  If the Catalog says the book is “AVAILABLE”, you may give them the Call Number.
  • Additional telephone policy is in the Reference Questions Guidelines.

Back up to Reference Desk Phone
When there is no answer at the Reference Desk, the call is transferred to the Reference Administrative Assistant. The Administrative Assistant will assist the patron by checking for titles and/or availability, explain that the librarian is assisting another patron and ask them to call again later, or complete a Question Referral form and take it to the Reference Desk for reply. If the Administrative Assistant doesn't answer, the call goes to voice mail.
