Opening and Closing Procedures
    Opening
The person scheduled for the first hour of the day (usually 9:00 AM on weekdays) will do the following:
  • Gather all statistics sheets for the previous day and put them in the Reference Administrative Assistant's inbox.
  • Remove "closed sign" and place in drawer marked “signs".
  • Check reference desk workstations to see that they are functioning. Start them up and logon to them if necessary (logon to passwords page to see password).
  • Start up the Reference Chat system on at least one of the workstations. There is a link on one of the top toolbars on the browser that says "Reference Chat Login". For more info: Reference Chat Procedures.
  • turn on the walkie-talkies (the one on the counter in the kitchen and the ones at the reference desk) [added 11/09]

Closing
The person scheduled for the last hour of the day will do the following:

  • Place sign on desk stating that the "Reference Desk is Closed" and what time a librarian will return.
  • turn off the walkie-talkies (the one on the counter in the kitchen and the ones at the reference desk)  [added 11/09]

If the Reference Desk closes at the same time as the building closes to the public (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the Regular Quarter, and most days during the Summer Quarter and Quarter Breaks), he or she should close the desk fifteen minutes before the building closing time in order to use the elevators before they are locked. The Circulation department will clear the floor of patrons and lock it down.

Breaks
During the weekend hours, the reference desk person should place a sign on the desk (indicating when he/she will return) when going on breaks. For very short breaks, you can use the sign that says "Please Wait - The Librarian is Assisting Another Patron".
