April 15th is the annual deadline to file income tax returns (reports) in the United States. On that date taxes are reported for the previous calendar year (January 1st through December 31st).
International Students are required to file income tax returns if they have been employed in the United States. Federal taxes are reported on form 1040 and state taxes are reported on form 540. Special versions of these forms for non-residents are designated ?NR.?
All international students are required to submit form 8843 (Statement for Exempt Individuals?) identifying themselves to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) even if they have not worked.
IRS forms are available at the IRS website at www.irs.gov. You can also call them at (800) 829-3676. The International Center will conduct an income tax presentation for international students prior to the April 15th filing date.
A free self-help tax website sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin?s International Office is available at: www.utexas.edu/international/taxes
