J-1 Exchange Student Academic Training

“Academic Training” is paid or unpaid employment in the major of your academic program in the United States as listed on your DS-2019 form. The amount of academic training eligibility is limited to the amount of months you have been enrolled as a student at Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) with an over-all limit of 18 months. In counting months of eligibility, part-time academic training counts the same as full-time.

Academic Training after Completion of your Program of Study

  • Have good academic standing at CPP after completion of coursework
  • Provide a written letter (e-mail is acceptable) of approval from the Coordinator at your home university
  • Provide a written letter (e-mail is acceptable) of recommendation from your CPP Academic Advisor (see guidelines below)
  • Provide a written offer of employment including job title, description of job duties, dates of employment, number of hours per week, salary and location of employment on company letterhead at least two weeks before your DS-2019 form expires so that a new DS-2019 form for academic training can be issued
  • Academic training cannot be authorized after your current DS-2019 expires
  • The academic training DS-2019 begins when your current DS-2019 ends however employment does not have to begin at that time

Cal Poly Pomona Academic Advisor’s Recommendation needs to include the following:

  • Description of the training program including the job title, location of employment and dates of training (employment) and number of hours per week
  • Goals and objectives of the academic training
  • How does the training relate to the student’s major field of study at CPP
  • Why is the training an integral or critical part of the academic program of the exchange visitor student
