J-1 Exchange Student Academic Training
“Academic Training” is paid or unpaid employment
in the major of your academic program in the United States as listed on your
DS-2019 form. The amount of academic training eligibility is limited to the
amount of months you have been enrolled as a student at Cal Poly Pomona (CPP)
with an over-all limit of 18 months. In counting months of eligibility, part-time
academic training counts the same as full-time.
Academic Training after Completion of your Program of Study
- Have good academic standing at CPP after completion
of coursework
- Provide a written letter (e-mail is acceptable)
of approval from the Coordinator at your home university
- Provide a written letter (e-mail is acceptable)
of recommendation from your CPP Academic Advisor (see guidelines below)
- Provide a written offer of employment including
job title, description of job duties, dates of employment, number of hours
per week, salary and location of employment on company letterhead at least
two weeks before your DS-2019 form expires so that a new DS-2019 form
for academic training can be issued
- Academic training cannot be authorized after your
current DS-2019 expires
- The academic training DS-2019 begins when your
current DS-2019 ends however employment does not have to begin at that
time
Cal Poly Pomona Academic Advisor’s Recommendation
needs to include the following:
- Description of the training program including
the job title, location of employment and dates of training (employment)
and number of hours per week
- Goals and objectives of the academic training
- How does the training relate to the student’s
major field of study at CPP
- Why is the training an integral or critical part
of the academic program of the exchange visitor student
