Other IME Department Activities:

Fall Picnic

Every Fall, close to the beginning of the school year, the IME Department hosts a picnic. It is held on campus by the Rose Garden. The picnic is held late in the day for the convenience of those students and faculty who have evening classes.

The purpose of the affair (other than food, fun and games) is to serve as an "icebreaker' for new students. They get to meet their classmates and the faculty in an informal setting outside the classroom for friendly chats and discussions.

One of the highlights of the picnic is the annual student-faculty volleyball match. This fast-paced event, usually played under "gorilla" rules demonstrates that the faculty can do more than manage a chalkboard! Continuing students look forward to the picnic to welcome new students to campus and to get them involved in student affairs, and of course, to take on the faculty in volleyball once again!

Second Annual Total Product Development Symposium, November 6-8, 1997

Cal Poly Pomona has become the site of the Western Taguchi Center in conjunction with the American Supplier Institute. The IME Department, in partnership with the American Supplier Institute, Allen Park, Michigan, held a very successful three-day symposium at the Kellogg West Education Center. 300 people attended from all over the world. Featured speakers were Dr. Genichi Taguchi, developer of what has become known as Taguchi Methods and Robust Design; Shin Taguchi, Dr. Yuen Wu, and others well known in the field of Robust Design. The Symposium concentrated on case studies, tutorials, and special presentations on QFD, Taguchi Methods, and TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving).

Boy Scout Merit Badge Day

Each February Cal Poly Pomona hosts a small group of Boy Scout Troops (by invitation only) for Boy Scout Merit Badge Day in conjunction with Engineers Week in February. Scouts can earn merit badges for such subjects as Engineering, Drafting, Computers, Metalwork, Chemistry, Electronics, Electricity, Atomic Energy, and others. The Scouts get to use real laboratory and shop equipment. Student clubs assist in the day's activities.

Thanksgiving Party

A long-standing tradition of the IME Department is the annual Thanksgiving dinner. A committee of students from the department's clubs and societies handles the planning and food preparation. They put on a traditional Thanksgiving feast one week before Thanksgiving. The dinner is held at one of the faculty's houses for all the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and their families and friends. We gather to relax, celebrate, and socialize over the festive dinner. Graduation Celebration

Graduation and entering into the world of the engineering professional is celebrated with a formal lawn party at the home of one of the faculty members, Prof. Girouard. Graduates, their "significant others", faculty and guests are feted at this gala celebration. The evening's events include meeting and greeting with refreshments, a sit-down dinner, and a graduation cake and champagne cocktail. Students and faculty sit and reminisce during the warm summer evening, which typically marks the occasion, before saying their final good-byes.

End of the Year Banquet

The academic year is brought to a fitting finish with the annual Awards Banquet. Students, faculty and alumni are all invited to a stellar evening celebrated at a local restaurant.

Other than the banquet, the highlight of the evening is the award of scholarships to those students who have qualified for them by their academic and professional performance. Professor O'Neil, Chair of the Scholarship Committee, serves as Master of Ceremonies for the awards. Although the presentation is serious, he never fails to regale the audience with his repartee.Occasionally a faculty skit is presented to the amusement and delight of the audience.

During the evening, the incoming and outgoing officers of the various professional societies along with their academic advisors are introduced and recognized for their contribution to the department.
